Santa Clarita Homeowners Have Questions After Sunday's Earthquake in Los Angeles

Several of my clients had questions after hearing about Sunday night's 4.7 magnitude earthquake centered near the Los Angeles International airport. Even though we didn't feel it here in Santa Clarita, homeowners want to know more about earthquake coverage and policies.

Earthquake insurance must be purchased separately from your standard insurance policy. Although it is not mandatory to carry a policy covering your home and personal belongings in the event of an earthquake, if you are considering adding this coverage you will most certainly want to speak to your agent about this matter.

Earthquake in Los Angeles - 5.4 in Chino Hills

We just experienced an earthquake here in the Los Angeles area. Even though the epicenter was more than 50 miles south of Santa Clarita, we still had two strong jolts. Typically, all insurance companies impose a moratorium period, 30 days or, so, where they will not write new earthquake insurance policies for property located within 100 miles of the epicenter. It is reported that the earthquake was a 5.4 magnitude, centered in Chino Hills. There is some damage, like a broken water main at Cal State University in Los Angeles, but no one has reported any injuries, so that is the good news.
