Santa Clarita insurance agent Greg Nutter is president of the Diabetes Association here in Santa Clarita. He recently travelled to Chicago for the annual convention. He came back and told the Rotary Club about some things he had learned.
"Diabetes is an unnecessary, exploding disease in this country. Children are being diagnosed with diabetes at an unprecedented rate. This can be controlled with diet and exercise."
Greg went on to tell us that each person in the United States eats 66 pounds of
high fructose corn syrup each year. This product first grew in popularity during the 1980's here in the U.S. Also, 40% of everythig we eat comes from corn. This has changed our metabolism and accounts for much of the obesity, heart disease, and cancer we get, as well as diabetes.
Children are more at risk today than they have ever been. Many times a child exhibits flu-like symptoms and is prescribed antibiotics or other medication. Upon closer examination it is found that the child has diabetes.
Greg advocates regular exercise daily, which can be brisk walking or swimming. He also tells us that we should read the labels on the foods we eat and to avoid sugar, excessive salt intake, and to refuse to eat any products containing high fructose corn syrup.
